Album Takes A Trip Through Presidential Past
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Wireless Flash) – A songwriting trio is using the strength of song to give past presidents the spotlight.
Christian Kiefer, Matthew Gerken, and Jefferson Pitcher wrote Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs about 43 U.S. Presidencies, an album with poignant perspectives on every former president.
The Andrew Jackson song is a “heart-breakingly devastating” tune about the Cherokee genocide, and the Calvin Coolidge tune is about his son dying from an infected blister.
Kiefer explains, “We tried to ignore the obvious, like Clinton fuþþing his way through the White House. It’ll be clear we’re not Republicans.”
As the November elections draw nearer, Kiefer plans on putting his presidential knowledge to the TV test.
He says, “I’m sure we’ll go on a talk show and be hit with all the trivia, like which president had a custom- made bathtub. The answer, of course, is Taft.”
Of Great and Mortal Men is due out in June, and Kiefer will debut the presidential songs March 12 at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
